What Is Microbiology? It’s Philosophy & Objectives In Nigeria

According to, Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, archaea, fungi and protozoa.

This discipline includes fundamental research on the biochemistry, physiology, cell biology, ecology, evolution and clinical aspects of microorganisms, including the host response to these agents.

The B.Sc. programme in Microbiology gives broad exposure to the students in the theory and practice of microbiology and emphasizes the application of microbiology in medicine, industry, agriculture, biotechnology and other relevant fields.

Above all, microbiologists are essential in helping us to treat diseases. Many work as biomedical scientists in hospitals and laboratories: testing samples of body tissue, blood and fluids to diagnose infections, monitor treatments or track disease outbreaks.

Furthermore, some microbiology graduates work as clinical scientists in hospitals, universities and medical school laboratories where they carry out research and give scientific advice to medical staff.

Other microbiologists work on disease-causing microbes, such as flu or tuberculosis, and the information they find is used to develop vaccines and improve current treatments.

Today in Nigeria the possibility to get the critical disease is pretty high. Main reasons are such as high temperature, low quality of water, a significant amount of insects and animals, which could carry a whole bouquet of different serious diseases.

Probably, there is no possibility to make this problem disappear, but it could be prevented.

Moreover, the medical microbiology job opportunities are also available in analytics laboratories. They analyze groundwater, water supplies, and foodstuff. This is also a significant issue. Because, it helps to control suppliers of supermarkets and keep the quality of water and food on the allowable level.

I must say I am grateful beyond words for this expository article of yours. But why have microbiologist been barred from hospitals. It’s a major challenge as we can not gain access to Industrial Training there any longer.
