Registered Nurses in Nigeria
Registered nurses provide care to patients by assessing and monitoring their condition, working in coordination with physicians during medical procedures, and administering treatments prescribed by the healthcare provider.
They perform diagnostic tests, operate medical equipment, and educate patients on follow-up care.
An RN’s primary skills and responsibilities include:
- Monitoring patients’ conditions and informing the healthcare provider of important changes.
- Educating patients on their health and providing support.
- Performing diagnostic tests and updating patient medical records.
- Assisting the healthcare provider during medical procedures.
- Advocating for a patient’s health and well-being.
The general nursing qualification is awarded after a three (3) year Basic General Nursing Program in a recognized School of Nursing (SON) in Nigeria.
The School of Nursing (SON) is majorly run by a University Teaching Hospital except for a few that are private.
Upon completion of the hospital-based program, sit for the professional examination by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
After which you will be deemed as a Registered Nurse if you successfully passed the exam.
As an RN, in order to advance in your career, you would need additional qualifications.
There are diverse pathways that you can take to specialize.
We’ll be considering only one of these pathways, which is the Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.NSc).
RN to BSc Nursing in Nigeria
There are a few different ways to complete an RN to BSc Nursing program in Nigeria.
One option is to apply to a university that offers a direct-entry program.
These programs typically take 3-4 years to complete and allow you to earn your Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) degree without having to complete a diploma or associate’s degree in nursing first.
Another option is to complete a diploma or associate’s degree in nursing and then apply to a university to complete your BScN.
This option will typically take 2-3 years to complete.
You can also complete an RN to BScN program through a distance learning program.
These programs are offered by several universities in Nigeria and allow you to study from home.
Here are the steps to complete an RN to BSc Nursing program in Nigeria:
1. Check the eligibility requirements of the universities you want to apply to.
Most universities require that you have a diploma or associate’s degree in nursing and a valid RN license.
You may also need to have certain prerequisite courses, such as anatomy, physiology, and microbiology.
2. Gather the required documents.
This may include your diploma or associate’s degree in nursing, your RN license, your prerequisite transcripts, and your personal statement.
3. Apply to the universities of your choice.
The application process for RN to BSc Nursing programs in Nigeria varies from university to university.
Submit your application form, your required documents, and your application fee.
4. Take the entrance exam.
Some universities require that you take an entrance exam as part of the application process.
The entrance exam typically covers topics in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and nursing theory.
5. Wait for the admission decision.
The admission process for RN to BSc Nursing programs in Nigeria can take several weeks or months.
Once you have been admitted, you will be notified by the university.
6. Start your studies.
Once you have been admitted to an RN to BSc Nursing program, start your studies.
The program typically takes 3-4 years to complete.
Admission Requirements
- Have five credits in English, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry in not over two (2) sittings for either WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB to be offered admission into the program.
- Get a JAMB form for direct admission into the program. You will start from the 200 level instead of the 100 level.
